My name is Carter and I’m only nine years old, but already North York General has made a huge difference in my life.
If you had to choose one thing that you’re most grateful for, what would it be?
For me, it’s an easy answer. I’m grateful that North York General was here to help my mom get better when she was really sick.
You see, my mom was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. The day that she told me was the worst day of my life. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I tried to be brave for mom. I kept on my best behaviour and helped more with my little brother, Andrew. I even helped mom shave her head when her hair started falling out.
Mom was treated at North York General. The whole time Mom was sick she kept telling me how good the doctors and nurses were. She just knew that they would do whatever they could to help her get better, but it was still really scary to see my mom feeling so bad.
Thankfully mom was right, and she did get better. When mom told me her cancer was finally gone I jumped and hugged her tight. When I told my mom how happy I was she smiled and got tears in her eyes. Then she asked me: “Carter, did you know I’m not the only person in our family North York General has helped?” It turns out the hospital has been here for lots of people in my family – including me, when I was just a baby.
Then I found out the hospital helped my dad when he was just a kid like me. He had his tonsils out at North York General and they fixed his elbow when he broke it playing hockey. Mom told me that most of my grandparents have had surgery at North York General too, and that my grandpa has been in practi¬cally every room in the hospital! They helped fix his hip and even gave him a pacemaker. Mom says it’s thanks to North York General that Grandpa is able to keep up with me and Andrew!
It turns out that North York General has been here for my family for generations. It’s been here in happy times, like when my uncle was born, and sad times, like when my great-grandmother passed away.
That’s why I’m grateful for North York General. It’s made such a huge difference in my life and helped so many people in my family so many times! And I’m also grateful to people like you, who support North York General so the doctors and nurses have the equipment they need to help people get better.
Your gift will ensure that families like Carter’s can always count on North York General, generation after generation.
